Well our door exploded it at least that’s what it sounded like. We called the cops Cuz you know, exploding doors. They ruled out shots but couldn’t say someone didn’t try to punch thru. Also said it could be the temperature change but we didn’t have any a/c running. No sleepy tonight

Crazing/microcracking in polycarbonate panes?
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:04 |

Polycarbonate =glass? But wtf

Was there dead bird?
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:07 |
|
No. It’s the type of plastic that’s usually used for headlights. You know, the ones that turn yellow. If it is glass, it could be microscratching on the surface.

Or that’s what they want you to think
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:08 |

Well damn, thats actually terrifying!
I thought it was like rain or some weird weather which confused me.

Never mind. Just read other comments. Didn’t realize it was actually broken. That sucks man. I thought it was just the light in the photo, thinking “no way all of those panes are so perfectly shattered”. Honestly no idea.

Negative. No impact crator nothing on the ground but a definite point of origin

Wow, that’s intense. I hope you figure it out.

Unless that’s laminated safety glass a regular impact shouldn’t have made such a fine, even spiderweb. That looks like a stress fracture. How old is the house? Does it ever “settle”?
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:17 |

We were in the kitchen so it couldn’t have been the kids. I’m thinking is either someone tried to punch thru saw us and ran out or was a delayed reaction from the kids banging the this afternoon

Being a door i think it’s impact glass. Only 2 year s old

It seems as if my sister visited your house. Seriosly, I can shut my truck door by pushing it with my pinky. She slams it with the force of an EF5. So, sorry, you must have had my sister knock on your door.

House is 100 but the door is 2. The odd part is that there is a center to the fracture.

Having just brought home a newborn this shit scares the ever loving crap out of me. I really hope it was an environmental factor.

An impact hard enough to create cracks throughout that whole huge pane like that should have been strong enough to knock some glass out. The culprit’s gotta be pressure, stress, a manufacturing defect, or some combination of those. Did the people you got the door from offer a warranty?
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:31 |
|
Your probably right. Maybe someone was playing a “prank” or trying to break in and used one of those emergency spring-loaded glass breaking tools?
![]() 08/03/2015 at 01:41 |
|
It could have been a bird or a bat. Those things always fly into glass. Did you look outside for blood, feathers, or maybe even the bird? (I’m sure you did, but it could have managed to fly away)
EDIT: Just read all the comments. No sign of bird... hm. You said no point of origin, so how would someone punching not leave a crater of any kind? Unless they used their whole body, but that’s not a big burglar if it didn’t work.

One of the doors in my house is the same color :o
![]() 08/03/2015 at 08:36 |

whats the rest of the house? ours is gray with white trim, both have a bit of cream tint to it. I think when we picked the paint, the machine they used to match the color picked up a bit of the wood from underneath. It probably turned out better than the original color.

Most of the walls are white or a very light yellow, wooden floors.

Stress cracks propagate from a corner. If there had been enough stress on the door to break the glass, you would have noticed it long before the glass broke since the door would have been bound up enough to cause issues with opening, closing, and latching properly.
Something hit the glass.

there is a center of origin in the center of the pane right next to the deadbolt. There is not impact mark (like from a bullet or hammer) tho, and the glass is not deformed (like what you would expect from a punch or something. The door swings freely. Its quite odd.

Our back door is just like yours. The glass in this type of door is usually a single sealed unit that is inserted as a single piece and screwed into place. A few years ago, my wife left something on the stove and left the house. When the fire department arrived, they gained entry through the back door glass. Our back door is metal. The first kick hit the door just below the knob, leaving a nice boot mark and dent. Then he realized the center of the door was glass. He said his first kick didn’t even crack the glass. When he did boot the glass, it shattered into a million pieces all over the living room, the couch, the chair, the tables, the kitchen....
Our neighborhood was still being built out, so the developer stopped by to see if everything was ok. He was using the house next door as a parts warehouse, so he walked over and retrieved a new glass unit. Ten minutes later, the old one was out and the new one was in. Fastest repair ever.
It took months to clean up all of the glass.
There may not be an impact mark on the glass if it was hit with something large and heavy. That may be an indication it really was a person trying to get into the house.
